ABOUT RAJMACHI FORT

Among the several forts in the vicinity, Rajmachi Fort, which is nestled among the craggy slopes of the Sahyadri highlands (Western Ghats), has a rich historical importance. It consists of two twin fortresses, Shriwardhan and Manaranjan, which are surrounded by a spacious plateau called the machi.

The magnificent majesty of the fort is enhanced by the two Balekillas. The two routes to Fort Rajmachi are from Lonavala and Kondivde or Kondhane hamlet in Karjat Taluka in Raigad District, respectively.

HISTORICAL SIGIFICANCE OF RAJMACHI FORT

Rajmachi was first constructed as a defence building to keep an eye on the Bor Ghats, and it has a history that goes back two thousand years. The structure of the fort is made up of spectacular ramparts, strong walls, wide entrances, residential sections, water supply facilities, office buildings, and secret departure gates. The Kal Bhairav temple, made of dry masonry, lies tucked away between the Shrivardhan and Manaranjan forts.

Rajmachi Fort rose to prominence as one of the most important Maratha Empire forts under the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1657. The fort's impressive architecture amid the Western Ghats was enhanced by Shivaji Maharaj's addition of new buildings. The fort has witnessed a variety of eras and rulers throughout history.

The western side of Rajmachi Plateau offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Ulhas River Valley. Along the slopes of the same hill, on the path leading to the western coast, one can find the Kondane Buddhist caves. These ancient caves are believed to have been carved during the 2nd century BC.
